Government and economic development attorney Nicholas M. Colvin has joined Warner Norcross + Judd LLP as senior counsel.

An experienced attorney within municipal, state and federal government, Colvin also has a background in real estate and political law and has frequently provided counsel on a wide array of public policy issues. He served in the West Wing under President Barack Obama and as special counsel to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on COVID-19 matters. He will practice in the firm’s Grand Rapid’s office, where he will focus on impact investing and municipal finance work.

Before joining Warner, Colvin was an associate at Miller Canfield in its Lansing and Detroit offices. There, he counseled municipal, state and federal executive leadership and project teams on public policy matters. He also assisted public and private clients in acquisitions of public assets and the design and negotiation of public-private partnerships, property sales for development and use, and municipal finance issues.

During his time at Miller Canfield, Colvin also was appointed as special assistant attorney general and special counsel for Gov. Whitmer’s administration, representing the governor on a number of matters. As COVID-19 special counsel, Colvin provided counsel to the governor, her executive team and state agencies on legislative and executive measures designed to stop the spread of the virus and on processes for the responsible reopening of the state’s economy.

Prior to that, Colvin was an attorney with law firms in Chicago and Washington, D.C. He also served as chief legal officer for the City of Chicago’s treasurer and was responsible for oversight of the investment of more than $7 billion of public funds.

Earlier in his legal career, Colvin served in the White House counsel’s office, where he was part of the West Wing team responsible for advising President Barack Obama, White House senior officials and federal agencies on litigation, development of legislative and administrative proposals, investigations and presidential nominations.

Colvin is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and Illinois State Bar. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science and African American studies from the University of Michigan and a law degree from Harvard Law School. &nbsp;

A native of Ionia, Colvin resides in Grand Rapids.
